9) Hotel Pens/Pencils/Matchbooks
My family has collected matchbooks from hotels and restaurants for as long as I can remember, despite the fact that no one in my family smokes. They all go in big jars on the counter in my parents’ kitchen, like a grab-bag of memories. They usually only get pulled out to light candles whenever someone has a birthday, and inevitably my dad will look at the matchbook, chuckle to himself, and then launch into a story about the place where he got it.
Hotel pens and pencils are great because they are useful. I am all about useful souvenirs. Yes, they do eventually lose their points or run out of ink, but in the meantime, you get to look at that tool every time you use it and remember a little part of a trip you took.
