My Three Favorite Things About Wilmington

1) Nature

Start downtown on the river-walk. Consider a boat tour through the marshes of the Cape Fear river, or grab an ice cream from famed Kilwins and walk along the riverside, past the spot where the Downtown Sundown concerts play for free every Friday during the summer, past the lot where they held the Food Truck Rally, all the way to the end of the walk. Stare out at the Battleship for a little while, finish your ice cream, then go get in your car.

Turn down Market street. Drive under the towering oaks whose Spanish moss nearly brushes the roof of your car. Turn right on 16th and make an immediate left on Dock. Follow this curved one-way through a quaint neighborhood of wood-paneled homes painted in cool blues and grays. The street becomes Wrightsville Avenue, the tree-lined alternative to Oleander Drive’s four lanes. After a stop by Wilmington institution Grinders Caffe for your coffee fix, Wrightsville will take you all the way to the sound, where you’ll encounter fishermen, kayakers, paddle boarders, and boaters. For great surfing or just a day on the beach, Wrightsville Beach is just a little farther down the road.

Other natural wonders:

Masonboro Island: The largest undisturbed barrier island along the southern part of the NC coast. A perfect place to kayak, fish for oysters, camp, or just enjoy a day among nature.

Greenfield Lake Park and Gardens: 250 acre park with a 5-mile bike/walking trail surrounding the lake. You can also rent paddle boats to take out onto the lake. Plus there’s an outdoor amphitheater where concerts often take place.

Airlie Gardens: “Formal gardens, wildlife, historic structures, walking trails, sculptures, views of Bradley Creek, 10-acres of freshwater lakes, more than 100,000 azaleas and the grandeur of the 467-year-old Airlie Oak.”

You may recognize this fountain from some scenes in Dawson’s Creek… You can find it at Airlie Gardens.
