Hayley Swinson Travel Writing Workshops Leland Cultural Arts Center Fall 2018Travel Writing Workshops

My next travel writing class will be held at the Leland Cultural Arts Center this fall.

Intro To Travel Writing || Thursdays 1-3PM
Sept 13-Oct 18
Nov 1-Dec 13 (No class Nov 22)

$125 Brunswick County Residents, $135 Non-Residents

The class will have three facets: discussion, reading, and creating.

Drawing on advice from The Cambridge Companion To Creative Writing and Lonely Planet’s Guide To Travel Writing, among others, our discussion will explore the basics of travel writing: What makes a travel story compelling? How do we convey truth in an engaging way? How much description should we use versus exposition? Which tales will make good travel stories, and which ones should we pass by?

I will provide a variety of readings from well-known travel writers such as Paul Theroux, Bill Bryson, Elizabeth Gilbert, J. Maarten Troost, and others.

We will have writing assignments both in class and at home as well as one “workshop” session. I will provide written feedback on a minimum of two writing assignments throughout the course. At the end of the 6-week session, students will have an opportunity to share the writing they’ve been working on.
