Short (15-minute) Introductory Consultation

Cost: Free

This consultation is an opportunity to figure out which of my services would benefit you the most. The consultation is not meant to address any issues with your work or ideas, but rather to determine where you are in the creative process and which service would be most appropriate for your current stage.

One-Hour Creative Consultation

Cost: $50.00

A creative consultation is a focused discussion about your creative idea, plot point or character arc you’re stuck on, or any other writing-related problem you may be having. Please note, this is not a career consultation (I don’t consult on publishing-related problems), but rather a creative consultation, where the focus is your work.

I will read up to ten double-spaced pages ahead of time to prepare for our discussion. This can include a synopsis, outline, introductory chapter, etc.

Developmental Edit

Cost: 1 cent per word
Minimum: 30,000 words

Developmental editing is for writers who have a completed manuscript and would like feedback on big-picture structural aspects of their book. In a developmental edit, I will give you detailed feedback on plot (including plot holes, overall pacing, and areas in need of additional research), characters (consistency of voice and point of view), tone and language (appropriateness for target audience and subject), theme, setting.

Keep in mind this is not a line-edit. Most manuscripts in need of a developmental edit are not yet ready for a line edit because of the structural changes that must take place first. I will give you a lengthy (usually between five and ten single-spaced pages) response that details my impressions of your book and the structural aspects stated above.

I will always do my best to highlight what is working in your book in addition to what is not working. I will also provide suggestions for ways to fix the structural issues in your book, and I try to include at least one or two relevant craft articles as PDFs when I send you my commentary.

Style Edit

Cost: 3 cents per word
Minimum: 15,000 words

Style edits are for writers whose work has already undergone several larger edits and is structurally very sound (plot, character consistency, subject, theme). When I style-edit a manuscript, I go line-by-line and examine dialogue, language, tone, vocabulary, mood, sentence flow, etc. This is a much more involved edit than a developmental edit, focusing on more specific and individual issues in the text itself rather than examining the bigger picture.

A style edit is not a copy edit, which is line-by-line check for correct grammar and punctuation. I do not offer copy editing services, but if you are looking for a copy-editor, I will happily point you in the right direction.

Critiques

Cost: $25-$125
Length: <2 pages $15; 3-10 pages $25; 11-20 pages $50; 21-30 pages $75; 31-40 pages $100; 41-50 pages $125
Pages are double-spaced in 12-point Times New Roman font

Critiques are generally reserved for shorter works of fiction and creative nonfiction (short stories and essays). A critique focuses primarily on what is and isn’t working in a piece of writing. Rather than providing solutions, I will convey my interpretation of your work.

I will begin my critique by giving a short summary of your work through my eyes, followed by a discussion of what you’ve done well. I will then address where I think your work could be improved and why it’s not currently working. I will examine continuity errors especially: where did a character’s voice falter or change? Where does your plot become convoluted or unbelievable? etc.

The critique differs from a developmental or style edit in that it points out issues and leaves the solutions up to the writer.
