2) Film Industry
Ever have one of those days where your life feels like a movie? The film industry has been thriving in Wilmington since the 1980s. More than 350 film, television, and commercial projects have been shot on the 50-acre sound-stage lot on North 23rd street. In recent years, you couldn’t drive a block without running into another film crew shooting another production.
The film industry has put money into so many local businesses — everything from food services for catering to furniture stores for sets/props to clothing stores for wardrobe. I’ve seen a sunny day downtown turned into a rainy one for WE’RE THE MILLERS — a huge crane lifted what was essentially a giant shower head above the set and dumped water on the cast. I’ve seen the aftermath of battles fought in REVOLUTION (and the explosions — see above video). I’ve seen pubs downtown turned into 1920s speakeasies on the pilot episode for WITCHES OF EAST END. Wilmington loves the film industry, and the film industry loves Wilmington.
Disclaimer: these images and the explosions in the video are from season one of REVOLUTION. No spoilers here.
